Name: Rev. James Mikio ..................Location: Gabberton, Arizona, USA Growing up as a child in the 80's, I was always fascinated by the sounds of my childhood toys and video game systems. When the Gameboy Camera was released in the late 90's there was a small synth game on the unit. I used to write little synth lines, and peice them together in Sound Forge to make entire songs. Eventually I found out about the Gameboy Development Scene that was going on in Japan and got my hands on some writeable Gameboy Carts. Armed with these carts I was able to checkout all maner of sequencing software that people in different countries were developing at the time. I made a song in Blackbox Tracker, and didn't really like it, played around with the earlier versions of Little Sound Dj and thought it was promising, but fell in love with the Carillon Editor. Within a few weeks I'd made four tracks using the Carillon Editor, then I went into a huge musical slump for like 4 years where I didn't produce anything. My friends were running a Monthly experimental music night called "thru the wires" and they let me play my songs at a few of the events (I also used to DJ all of the Megaman Songs from my Gameboys just to kill time). Somehow I managed to lose most of my music Carts... and I attribute the musical slump largely to that fact. Eventually I got ahold of some more, and started writing tunes again. Little Sound Dj has come a long way since 2001 and now It's much more robust, so I've been using it for pretty much all of my new tracks. Durring the slump I experimented with Circuit Bending, mostly modifying Speak N Spell Toys, adding new features for any of my friends that could get their hands on a Speak N Spell. I added some modifications to some Toy Keyboards too, I still mess around with stuff like that from time to time. My friend Brandon has been throwing these huge Raves around Arizona, in warehouses and in the desert. I've played at a few of them. The rave kids seem to like it when I make Gameboy Covers of typical Rave songs they're familiar with... so I've been doing a lot of Cover Tunes lately. I think after this next Rave I may stray away from my Gameboy Gimmick and start making (hopefully) more complex music using either Modplug Tracker, or Renoise. |
